The Story Teller

Sebastian Michaels is the driving force behind the extraordinary Photoshop Artistry, AWAKE and the KAIZEN Group – a host of online photography and Photoshop courses – and feel honoured that he will be including one of my images, The Story Teller, as part of a demonstration tutorial in the KAIZEN Course this December. Photo artistry is a wonderful movement in the photography and digital art world that are giving many of us the chance to learn, develop and express our artistic abilities through creative photography, using Photoshop and other photo software programs. Over the years, the students from these courses have created a friendly, positive and supportive platform via private FB groups where we can share our artwork, and develop our skills together in a safe and positive online environment. These artists now feel like my family.
Over time I learned that Photo Artistry covers a vast array of styles and many different approaches. Photo artists mostly use a combination of photography, photographic textures, extracted photographic elements/models and effect overlays that the artist layer together in photoshop, using a variety of blending techniques to create their artwork. Artists can also create digital drawings or physically create mixed media art to then be photographed and composited into their digital art work. All these methods and much more are used to create layers upon layers for painterly and artistic effect in a photographic montage, collage or conceptual imagery for a visually rich textured artistic digital artwork. This is creative, fun and somewhat an addictive journey that digital artists and of course all artists form every walk of life shares.
The Story teller is an interesting development in my journey with some new skills to apply in character transformation which was inspired by the amazing artist, Gail Edwards. Character transformation is a process where you take a portrait image and reshape and mould the model’s facial features into the character that you have envisioned, mainly using the Liquify Tool, Airbrush for blending, Dodge & Burn for contrast and the Smudge Tool for hair.
I find my hobbit character quite endearing and as he developed through the creative process, I became very fond of him. Flavus Proudbottom sits religiously down at every sunset to read to his animal friends of the field. Flavus has such a gift for reading that the words literally turns to magic and light up the end of the day. His wing and furry friends are spellbound and you can hear a pin drop except for a few crickets chirping and some sheeps bleating in the distance. This is the most beautiful time of the day at Mossy Oak Pastures.

Gail Kindly gave her permission for me to share five of her images that I really love and I hope you enjoy them too.
Gail says; “I’ve held a camera in my hands for over 30 years now and have shot pretty much everything under the sun….except people. So, it’s a bit strange that the main focus of my art is based around people and their expressions! However, there is something that excites me when I choose a model, study them and then build a story around how they look or what they are wearing. Most of my art has a very romantic, fantasy feel to it with the odd piece straying to the dark side! I’m a romantic at heart and it shows in my work.”

“There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world” – Thorin Oakenshield from The Hobbit
