A New Dawn
Tuesday 13 October 2020
I feel very honoured that my conceptual photographic image, A New Dawn, has been part of two exhibitions during the difficult times of Covid-19, this year. A Moment of Silence, an online exhibition and presentation hosted by The Arts Project and St Pancras Hospital, and the Black Lives Matter exhibition @ London Light House Studio & Gallery on the London City Island, hosted by Sokari Higgwe – both exhibitions in the support of Black Lives Matter. After the murder of George Floyd and around the time of the marches against racism earlier this year (2020), I wanted to explore and create and idea to express the turmoil and unrest that has been stirred-up in us, individually and as a society.
This strong and quite violent image with a black fist breaking through the Statue of Liberty, surrounded by a mass grave, came to my mind and it was a matter of finding the right images to bring this idea to reality. It is a reflection of outrage, courage and the determination for change, and the necessity to keep this movement alive.

‘Through this image, I am trying to put my self in the place of the victims of violence and racism and the anger and disappointment they must feel that what the statue of Liberty stands for and what their country and home represents, friendship, freedom from oppression and the torch which stands for enlightenment, has been dishonoured. The grave of skulls that surrounds the statue represent slavery and years of oppression and violence that should never be forgotten. I use the symbolic black fist breaking through the statue to emphasise how important it is for change at this moment and the reason for the title, A New Dawn.’
